The Art of ALTing: Invoking & Inventory Space

This article is part of our “Alternate Characters Guide” that explains the current functions of alts and the best ways to utilize them. If it feels a bit disjointed, click through to our guide hub, get an introduction, and links to even more related topics.

Inventory Space

The simplest form of using alternate characters is extending inventory space. Every character brought through the intro comes with 30 additional inventory slots, and 18 more doing the first few quests in the Blacklake District. Any account bound or unbound item that’s not currently needed can be stashed away this way. Without VIP transferring items is not as convenient, because you need find a mailbox every time you send or pick up items, but that’s not a major issue.

Creating new characters for inventory space is especially efficient if you own the Dragonborn Legend Pack that include an extra bag and is re-claimable on every character.

Invoking

A must-do on alternate characters is praying. Most players circle through their account and pray with all of their characters to start their day. If you happen to have a huge account in your friends list that missed making the farm chars invisible, you can tell by the spam of on and offline messages. The devs devalued this way of using ALTs by reworking the invoke system into an incremental one, but praying is still very viable. In the past you would get all benefits of invoking the first time you prayed, nowadays you need to circle through the account six times to achieve that, which I doubt a lot of people are doing. The rewards do not really warrant the effort in my eyes.

I personally invoke twice on ALTs, once to start the session and once to finish. That way you get the Celestial and Ardent Coins on every char as well as minor XP and a Celestial Bag of Refining. The RPs of the bag are negligible, but I do hoard them because of the ZEN vouchers. It might sound silly, but whenever I want to buy something on the ZEN market I log onto a character, open all Celestial Bags and land some sort of discount. Between this and the regular sales I can’t actually remember the last time I spend the full price on an item.

Your Main Incentive: Coalescent Wards

Every so often you will be able to buy a Celestial Coffer from Celestial Coins for a chance of a Coalescent Ward. Depending on whether you need more RPs or Enchanting Stones, you can either pick the Coffer of Celestial Artifacts or Coffer of Celestial Enchantments. Wards bind to account, the rest to your character. You can however move enchantments to you alts to upgrade them.

The estimated chance to get the Ward is only 3%, but a sizable account should be able to get enough to avoid buying them entirely. Especially since Rank 14 Enchantments it’s important to have many alts invoking. And if you don’t need Wards yourself, you can just flip them for profit. The Wards themselves are bound, enchantment fused from it however are not.

That’s it for today, but our “Alternate Characters Guide” offers even more way of profiting from ALTs. So check that out! In the meantime feel invited to share your thoughts in the comments below and visit the corresponding forum thread.

Could you please post how to use the tool you mention here? I am not certain how the checkbox options impact the data, and don’t know what the data for box value means. I can make an educated guess, but a post explaining the how the tool works would be helpful. I spend a lot of time on the AH buying and selling, and I think this tool might have helped me a great deal these past months. Thanks very much.
