Can Players in the Jungles of Chult Progress Faster Than Intended?

The “Tomb of Annihilation” module is in full swing on PC. Players are progressing through the “Jungles of Chult” campaign, having fun killing some T-Rexs or getting frustrated for not getting its Fang. Of course as with every update, the best players take pride in doing stuff first. Yesterday a few members of the high-end guild “Gutbusters Brigade” uploaded videos of them hunting down what is probably the first “King of Spines” of the international Dragon server.

Legit or Exploit?

This first and foremost is a reason to throw congrats to the guild. The accomplishment however was immediately overshadowed with claims that progress had been exploited. The underlying math indeed doesn’t add up. The campaign in Chult is subject of a hard cap of 100 Forgotten Totems, the progression currency. You can get 25 more from Hunts per week and 50 from the Chult Pack. So for week two, this would set the maximum of obtainable totems to 300 if you were choosing the Hunting path. Unlocking the King of Spines however takes 375.

Campaign Companion

There are a few suggestions where the additional 75 Forgotten Totems might have come from. First of all the totems gained from the campaign companion do not seem to fall under the cap. This means we’re only missing 45 totems if we add the 10% bonus. Additionally the companion does produce 10% extra totems from Soshenstar River quests even if the cap was already reached. While players can only earn a measly totem for each completion this way, it is an uncapped way of earning the currency.

Other ways?

There are also other unconfirmed ways that might play a role here. We know 1-Star Hunts let you earn additional totems over the cap. Players theorized that 2-Star Hunts might come with an independent extra cap as well. This however seems unlikely and it’s much more probable that the companion indeed is the only culprit.

But even if, it’s not impossible that this is actually intended. The companion is a premium item and if players do want to farm their butts off for the tiniest advantage, why not? This by the way also means we could see the first “Tomb of the Nine Gods” runs soon. The necessary extra grind is even higher there though. Using the middle path you’re able to get to 358 Totems in week two and you need 500 to unlock the dungeon. This might be a tad over the top considering that you are able to unlock the dungeon next week anyway.

What’s your take on the companion? Do you think this should be considered an exploit, simply unintended behavior or a legit way to farm the Jungles of Chult campaign? Share your thoughts in the comments below and visit the corresponding thread on our message board!

Wow, I thought the law was that whenever a headline asked a question, the answer was always ‘No’; but here’s one where the answer is actually ‘Yes’!

Joking aside; the companion gives 1 extra uncapped totem for each quest you complete, ad infinitum, even if you’ve already hit the cap and didn’t actually get any totems from the quest.

My personal opinion would be that it’s not working as intended. Every other source of ‘10% extra’ VIPs can get still respects the normal caps. This would be like giving 10% AD for salvage to bypass the RAD cap.

That, and it’s a bit contradictory to the stated goal of how the quests were designed in this mod: ‘No more daily quests, just play a few days a week to meet your weekly quota!’ …or, if you’ve got Zen, you can grind quests 24/7 with no limits!

These kind of design flow abuses came from certain players in the game. They should find them and bash their heads with those vodoo dolls

Dunno why there is a question about an exploit. Its crystal clear that they used an exploit.

Problem is you need to buy Zen Companion to farm extra campaign items so we arenot sure if developers wheteher wanted to work it this way so they can push Zen sales or it is a design flow and people are exploiting it

FWIW, the thread on the official forums discussing this issue is now hidden. This is as of 10 mins ago, when I signed back into Arc and checked the forums per my usual habit.

Don’t they test anything to make sure it works how they planned it? Whatever. What they say or don’t on the forum isn’t as interesting an answer as to how fast they change the actual behavior in the game. Or if they don’t change game behavior at all. If there are slow or no changes, then they don’t really care too much, and if they don’t care it might as well be intended. Even if it was an accident.
