Kali Gold and the Difficulty of Making it on Twitch with Neverwinter

If you’re following Neverwinter on Youtube and or Twitch, you probably know Kali Gold as the premier PC streamer of the game. About six months ago he started the ambitious journey to make Neverwinter great again, to bring more viewers to a game that was hovering around a measly 100. Yesterday this journey ended with a video announcement in which Kali basically stated that the effort was no longer worth it. We’d like to thank him for the content he has provided over the last months and wish him all the best on and off the screen going forward. What’s the issue with streaming NW? A streamer quitting is in itself not an overly interesting fact. They come and go, just like the regular gamers that play Neverwinter. But it illustrates the trouble you can run into if you’re putting your effort into streaming on Twitch. Especially an MMO, especially a considerably small one like Neverwinter. Kali Gold did probably receive as much support as you can get. Be it from other streamers, a spotlight on Arcgames or through frequent mentions and features on our site. Yet he never surpassed 150 average viewers on the channel, a far cry from

Today’s Patch Will Bring Massive Devoted Cleric Changes and Much Needed Campaign Improvements

Today Neverwinter will release its first major patch in the Cloaked Ascendancy and it’s safe to say it will shake up the current meta by quite a bit. The Devoted Cleric is getting its rework pushed to live after very limited time on preview to test it. Most feel it’s too early (as usual), but you would assume that Module 11b is already looming and will hit preview soon. So that was probably simply the time they had to present the changes to the audience. Moar damage! We’ll have a more detailed piece at some point next week with community opinions and an in-depth look at the changes, but want to quickly outline the most important points today. The devs tried to tackle multiple issues with their changes. First of all depending on the build, Clerics can run into severe trouble in solo content. They most likely do not die very much, but since their damage is low they have to drag themselves through dailies. So powers are getting a flat 30% increase in damage, which should actually help a lot. It remains to be seen whether this could also make Clerics a true viable DPS option in endgame. The most prominent

State of the Game Developer Stream Summary

Yesterday Community Managers Julia, Andy and Lead Designer Thomas Foss gathered on the Perfect World Twitch channel to talk the state of the game and answer user questions. We have summarized their most important statements and provided some additional comment. Have fun with it! On the State of the Game Foss said that they are trying to actively get more D&D spirit back into the game. The Treasure Maps, exploration and choices in the new campaign are what they want to continue. The concept of replayability introduced in Underdark has also been picked up again lately. Foss mentioned the Illusionist’s Gambit skirmish as example how they envision more content to be structured. No run should be like the previous and next one. In terms of modules they will continue to do one big module (like Storm Kings Thunder) and then one smaller “b” module (like Sea of Moving Ice). In those “b” modules they work down a list of quality of life issues and tackle them one by one. Module 11b will be dealing with Guilds and Strongholds and include a new guild event and Masterwork updates. Foss added that they also want to make it easier for small guilds to get

Lia Knowles (@rinat114) Exits Game After Ban, Says Goodbye to Her Crusaders

Sorry for those that were waiting for the Neverwinter Weekender in its usual Friday spot. We unfortunately had no time for a write-up today and had to postpone it to tomorrow. Well known Great Weapon Fighter Lia Knowles (@rinat114) was permanently banned for undisclosed reasons a little over two weeks ago. She stated she will not remain with the game. Lia was a public figure in the Neverwinter community as both GWF excellence and leader of the Crusaders guild and Relentless alliance. Playing the game since 2014 she runs a Youtube channel and next to Lazalia probably contributed the most popular build and guide for Great Weapon Fighters. She took down her build on MMOMinds, but it might still be available on Youtube or Arcgames. Being a public face she has been a popular target of drama, trash talk and name-calling. In the last months in example Neverwinter streamer AlsRandomKill was accused of stealing her build and someone apparently trolled her by posting her account for sale on the EpicNPC marketplace. This news is no troll and no rumor though, Lia Knowles unfortunately has wielded her last sword. Rinat tried to work support to get the account back for the last two weeks to no avail,

Module 11 Launches With Loadouts, Lags and Progression Irritations

Yesterday Module 11: The Cloaked Ascendancy launched with much fanfare! There was a great trailer, a nearly three-hour live stream with quite a few surprise appearances and, of course, the new content after an extended maintenance that got delayed multiple time. In today’s post we are looking back at the action yesterday. What went right, what went wrong and what are the most glaring issues so far? Delays and Lags The first rule of release days is: Don’t hope for everything to go right. The initially six hour maintenance from 6 AM to 12 PM Pacific got delayed until 3 PM. Players could fortunately kill some time on the official Perfect World live stream that was co-hosted by our new Community Manager Nitocris83. The stream received mixed reaction and was a little wild a times, but great getting to know some faces behind the usernames. Garlaanx by the way did a great video summarizing all gameplay relevant statements and we recommend to watch it! The most obvious issue after the maintenance was finally over was the insane lag in the new River District. Like, you could literally barely move. The most logical cause were overcrowded instances with an unusual high player

Parting Sean “Commander Ander” McCann Largely Shaped the Story over the past Modules

We already reported on our Community Watch Sunday that Neverwinter Content Designer Sean “Commander Ander” McCann set sails to join Blizzard in what could probably be described as next logical step in his career. Excited to start a new adventure on Monday as a designer on World of Warcraft! Looking forward to learning a ton at Blizzard! — McSean (@SeanMcCann14) February 11, 2017 Community Manager nitocris83 has also confirmed the departure of Commander Ander. We believe Sean was one of the main story designers of the game. He first actively appeared on the Arcgames forum as designer of the Elemental Evil campaign and Stronghold Quests. McCann has since been working on the story of Maze Engine, Storm Kings Thunder and the upcoming River District. “Tell Celeste….” If you are one of those that just rush through the story quests, you might have missed a large part of what he has done. Anything recent featuring Knox, Celeste, Xuna, and Makos as primary characters and their personal histories and motivations would have had his hands on it. The Ancient Dragon’s Lair is iconic, visually appealing, and was widely praised by players as feeling like a real adventure. The Maze Engine afterparty unveiled a lot of character development

Perfect World Entertainment Lays off up to 30 Employees

Sad news everyone! Yesterday it got more and more evident that PWE had released an unknown number of employees during the week. Perfect World later confirmed the lay-offs to Massively Overpowered. Anyone in the gaming industry need a graphic designer with 6+ years of experience? Just got laid off. — Katie Kasarda (@deejaykfm) February 2, 2017 Need a senior CM with experience and a loud-mouth to boot? Hit me up. I'm in the market for a job — M (@LaughingTrendy) February 2, 2017 Two former employees took the news to twitter and it’s important to note that the layoffs seem to affect only PWE, not Cryptic. In fact, Star Trek Online pointed out that the studio is actually actively recruiting. It’s always hard to judge these things, because you would need to compare the layoffs to the hiring. The case of LaughingTrendy is an interesting one though. Just like Neverwinter’s Strumslinger she was assigned to other projects within PWE in November 2016 only to be released now. That’s especially unfortunate since her replacement as Star Trek Online’s Community Manager apparently survived. The STO community gathered on the Arcgames forum to bid farewell to their longtime companion. Our beckylunatic additionally dug up

Neverwinter Introduces Chest Lockbox System for Dungeons

Welp guys, this is how promising can go over bad to worse in merely two weeks. Despite their rework of the dungeon loot drawing a large number of negative reactions, the devs are rushing the build onto live today. It’s very disappointing because as I wrote the other day I feel they haven’t tackled the core issues. It’s also hard to believe that the strong and encouraging words from Lead Designer Thomas Foss (“We are going to fix this!”) end up in such a lackluster solution. Community Manager Nitocris83 reiterated they are indeed looking into feedback, but it’s easy to see how players are currently feeling mostly ignored. Welcome to Lockbox Wonderland By taking away the ability to peek into chests and not properly compensating for the cost of the invested key, the devs effectively switch to a lockbox system for dungeons. So far players at least could generate additional chests to look into by farming dungeons. With that option gone it only makes sense to run content when you actually have the corresponding keys. It basically means players are going to run dungeons fewer than before. Legendary Dragons are completely dead, because before you gamble on dungeon chest loot, it’s

Official Neverwinter Subreddit Launching FAQ Project

As frequent reader of our site you probably already know from our Community Watch that the official PWE subreddit has launched a FAQ project. Each subreddit comes with its own wiki and the guys over there decided to use it to answer the most basic questions that pop up regularly. The project has potential It’s a solid project and worth supporting. So if you feel you can contribute in a meaningful way, contact the mods and you might get in. Not everyone will be approved however. It looks like you need some sort of positive reputation on the subreddit. With Uncensored regulars JayAgeDee and Beckylunatic participating, the team already looks decent and motivated. So this might actually go somewhere and it would be nice to have extensive FAQs up. The official wiki is not up to date in many areas and more of a database anyway. And admittedly our Chettlebell has explained less than we wanted to as well. As site we can’t do a ton to help here unfortunately. As you might know the subreddit banned us because they value a strict application of the official PWE terms of service more than useful information. This shouldn’t however lead to another rage against

Christmas Banwave Targeted Invocation and Profession Botting

Apparently Cryptic and PWE delivered a special gift to all botters around December 20th by banning multiple accounts involved in invocation and profession botting activities. Unlike the last major ban waves there was no official announcement, but the bot forums are full of ban reports. Besides some rumors we directly received confirmations from affected players as well. This seems to be legit. It’s that time again! Banning players right before Christmas has become a stable happening. Last year players got banned for botting, third-party transactions and a Starlight Parcel exploit. Unfortunately a number of innocents got hit in the process which turned into quite a mess. The overall silence could indicate that the devs have aimed better this time although we did receive some claims that not all bans are fully justified. Temporary suspension in the wave lasted for seven days, but permanent bans have been handed out as well. Neverwinter UN:Blogged is always looking for writers to contribute to the blog. If you are an active player and search for a way to spread your opinions, analysis, diaries or reviews to more than 35,000 regular visitors, then don’t hesitate and contact us on our message board or email! We are currently especially
