Could Fortnite Finally Pave the Way for More Cross-Platform Play?

In games like Neverwinter that operate on multiple gaming platforms (PC, Xbox, PS4), there’s always a certain desire for cross-platform play. From a player’s perspective, it comes with little downsides. Servers are more crowded, you can play the same character on your TV and desktop, and the whole community talks the same topics. Cryptic however has answered calls for cross-platform play with the usual “not possible because of Microsoft and Sony policies” so far.

That however doesn’t seem to be quite right. The popular sandbox survival game Fortnite recently announced that it is indeed adding cross-platform play, albeit not fully. Both Xbox and PS4 users can compete against PC, but not against each other. It’s still huge news for those supportive of connecting platforms and many people seem to think it’s the future. So this could actually pave the way for more cross-platform play also on other titles.

Merging Consoles and PC Is Technically Possible

Obviously Fortnite is no MMO. The barrier of merging console and PC on a game like Neverwinter is surely higher. It’s not like you’re only connecting hardware and be fine. Both games operate on different versions, which means you would have to change your whole production and release structure to make sure all platforms are updated on the same day. And then there’s always the question of competitive balance in PVP. Does mouse and keyboard or a controller have the edge? There are a lot of factors to consider, but it being technically possible is at least encouraging to say the least. So there’s definitely hope that one day we can all meet in the same Protector’s Enclave, no matter whether we log in through a PC, Xbox or PS4!

Can’t you use a mouse/keyboard on a Xbox/PS4? IF you allow both methods of playing on all versions, this would eliminate the disparity in control schemes between the different versions.

Also the economy is vastly different between the 3 versions, with tons of AD and bots floating around on the PC version compared to xbox/ps versions.

The biggest problem that Cryptic would have going cross platform like this is that they would have to hire a quality control staff instead of just letting all the bugs go live and using the PC player base as quality testers, before fixing bugs for consul release.

It’s as usually a question of money, rather a question of will.
Maybe in Magic the Gathering, Neverwinter is to old and to buggy despite the October bug chase.
