In the last installment of our Exploit History we recapped some exploits of early Valindra’s Tower and Malabog’s Castle. Today we are turning towards the Dracolich and how players could rush their way through the original Castle Never.
Granted, this is not the only exploit surrounding the dungeon, but probably the most commonly used one. Castle Never was not only a very hard dungeon back in the days, it also took 45 to 60 minutes to complete depending on your group. That’s why one particular shortcut gained popularity that allowed skipping a full area prior to the third boss.
Another jump challenge
Cryptic pretty much cut the dungeon in half with the rework. After today’s Orcus boss room players would go on to beat two additional bosses and cross three additional trash areas. One of these was the “Shadowfell”, which is entirely missing in the current version. In fact even players in the 60s era haven’t seen the Shadowfell a lot, because most groups bypassed it. Using a certain path the third boss was only a few jumps away. You only briefly had to enter the Shadowfell to update the map objectives.
This video shows the shortcut starting at 15:00. You see the Cleric entering the Shadowfell only to drop out and bypass the section. Because this never was fully fixed some players suggested it might have been an intended gimmick. In case you’re curious now how a full run looked, the next video shows one. Shadowfell starts at 18:20.
