Look, Other Games Like Destiny Ban Innocents as Well

Banning cheaters and exploiters in games is a difficult task, because there is virtually no way you are going to end up looking great in the process. Most devs can’t offer specifics of how they gather and use their data to filter out offenders, because they don’t want to give anyone ideas how to circumvent the system. But that also means you make yourself vulnerable to accusations of arbitrariness and mistakes.

Neverwinter Is No Stranger to Banning Innocents

Neverwinter has a fair share of controversial ban waves, some of them verifiably included too many “false positives”. In the aftermath of the Astral Resonator exploit players got banned that interacted with the Auction House in a specific way, but never actually exploited. In December 2015 a decent amount of players was banned for just opening a large number of Winter Gifts. And last May PWE unleashed an anti-bot algorithm on accounts that wasn’t very accurate either.

This shouldn’t happen, but it does. So maybe it helps to know that other games and their devs run into similar trouble when trying to figure out offenders. No other than powerhouse Destiny 2 featured a controversy soon after its PC release last week. A large chunk of players reported they had been banned for no apparent reason in what Bungie called a ban for third-party software usage. The studio later admitted the error and unbanned an unspecified amount.

It’s interesting because we often attribute errors at Cryptic HQ to their lack of resources. But that even Bungie doesn’t get it right all the time shows how hard of a task it actually is. It’s also a counter-argument to those that claim Neverwinter constantly screws while the competition is perfect. We know this doesn’t help anyone who got targeted innocently. But if you ever think that you’re experiencing a small-game misery, just know that bigger titles have the exact same issue.
