Mod 10: Scourge Warlock Guide by Daigotsu, With Special Guest… Fernuu Stormborn!

Greetings all!

Your friendly neighborhood Scourge Warlock is here (with special guest star Fernuu Stormborn!) to give ya’ll the 411 on what’s up! So The Storm King’s Thunder has arrived, and we’re all curious what to do with our Scourge Warlock’s now that Mod 10 is live…

Well, the good news is that in PvE I believe we actually have a few builds that are viable! The bad news is for PvP, from what I’ve seen/heard, we may be dead in the water. However, this thread is about PvE Builds for SWs, so let’s dive right in!

Prior to Mod 10 the go to, end all/be all, of PvE DPS/Survivability was Soulbinder/Fury. Really, there wasn’t much else going on… Sure you could be a Damnation SW with the goofy puppet, but really the fact you couldn’t get it into boss fights w/o silly workarounds was dumb and really pointless IMO. Now w/Mod 10 now, I believe there may be a usurper to that throne, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

We all know there was a slew of changes to the SW with the grand Class Balancing, and a number of things changed/were fixed. Overall, I believe we lost a bit of DPS at the top end, but the playstyle of SWs in PvE is much better now IMO.Β Notable changes mechanics wise:

Tyrannical Threat went the way of the dodo…

The new Tryannical Curse is still a solid Daily, but it certainly won’t clear packs of bad guys fast like before. Which leaves room for a number of other Dailies to see the light of day such as… Brood of Hadar, Immolation Spirits, Flames of Phlegethos, Gates of Hell, etc.

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]Just keep in mind you can’t cast more than one Tyrannical Curse at time. You can’t recast it when the original target is dead and if you’ll have full AP and cast it again – first one will be gone. Damage buff and damage link are working mostly like before so just select best target for it – which will last long enough to make it work.[/su_box]

Shadow Slip now offers a 1 second frame of Immunity. That means no damage, and no negative status effects. You can tell those Green Bubbles of Doom from CN to go eff themselves! Nothing to worry about anymore…

Soul Sparks now fade after combat slowly, 1 per second, and you can have some ready for the next group of bad guys.

Aside from that many, if not everything, was looked at and reviewed/revamped/redesigned. Knowing that we won’t dive into each nitty gritty detail of every change, and just focus on the ones that are key to the discussion in this post.

What I will say about Soulbinder Fury is that it still has great survivability, and Soul Scorch now providing AP is a big bonus to keeping AP gain going. Infact you can almost have permanent dailies going between Encounters, Sigil of the Devoted and Snail, if you have all that decked out. Only thing that would really change from pre-Mod 10 builds of SB Fury, in my mind, would rotation. For adds/questing, I’d recommend a high AoE dependent rotation: Fiery Bolt / Blades of Vanquished Armies / Killing Flames (w/MF Feated).

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]Even better! With Sigil, Snail and Soul Scorch you can have two dailies active at once! Imagine – casting Tyrannical Curse and 5 seconds later – Immolation Spirits – you can feel real Power of Nine Hells![/su_box]

Honestly, you should absolutely tear through adds that way. Single target, for bosses would look much like before: Killing Flames / Hadar’s Grasp or Warlock’s Bargain / Soul Scorch

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]In my opinion also good option here is to use Blades of Vanquished Armies (with Killing Flames / Soul Scorch) – it will make your sparks generation a lot faster and (if you will use All Consuming Curse and Fury path) will pop Lesser Curse a lot, which means debuff from Infernal Wrath.[/su_box]

Honorable mention goes to Cursed Bite, try it out w/All Consuming Curse slotted, etc. Speaking of passives, I’d honestly drop Borrowed Time for Shadow Walk as the Speed increase/deflect bonus from it is nice. If you have a decent life steal stat, 20% + and you’re using the Insignia bonus Vampire’s Craving, you honestly should be all set with healing and the new 25k Potion’s of Grand Healing.

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]Sticking with Blades and All Consuming Curse, you will make your targets affected with Lesser Curse now. So everyone of them will get hit from Curse Bite (which does really nice damage). You can skip BoVA/ACC combo with casting Accursed Souls first – they grant Lesser Curse now.[/su_box]

Now, ya’ll might be chomping at the bit to see what the new hawtness is, and w/my steady friends of mad research skillz y0, @fernuu and @thefabricant, we’ve found something nice and spicy for ya’ll…

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″][/su_box]

Hellbringer Fury is back in effect people!

I know, I know… The much maligned paragon path may be the best option for SWs, particularly at the higher Item Levels. Now, what could possibly make HB comparable, or even arguably better, to SB? Well, it was the change to the Encounter Power – PILLAR OF POWER!!!

Along w/the Feat in the Damnation Tree Β – Power of the Nine Hells.Β So let’s review…

Pillar of Power: This power has had a slight rework. Now always casts under your feet, instead of needing to be placed. Recharge time now starts as soon as you cast it instead of when the effect ends, and has been reduced to 10s, down from 15s. You may only have 1 Pillar of Power active at a time, so recasting it while it is still active will move it to your current location. The effects of the Pillar have changed, as well. In addition to increasing your damage, it now also grants you damage resistance while you stand within it. The Pillar no longer builds up and explodes when an enemy enters it. Instead, it lowers the enemies damage and damage resistance, and deals damage to them.

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]On top of that, while enemy enters you Pillar their damage reduction is decreased (more debuff!) and they deal less damage (more survivability).[/su_box]

[su_note note_color=”#c8c8c8″]Pillar of Power: Radius increased to 13′, up from 10′.[/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#c8c8c8″]Power of the Nine: Now extends to the new Damage Resistance buff, in addition to the Damage buff. Also allows you to retain the buff for 5 seconds outside the circle which is…[/su_note]

The general concept is as follows… You are a buff/debuff MACHINE (and that’s not even counting a Temptation SW w/Power of the Nine Hells! though significantly less DPS) when you combine Pillar of Power w/Dreadtheft’s new buff/debuff update.

[su_note note_color=”#c8c8c8″]Dreadtheft

  • No longer consumes Curses. Instead, now has a similar effect as a Curse Synergy. While you are using Dreadtheft, affected Cursed targets take increased damage from all sources, and you gain damage resistance based on the number of Cursed targets hit. Both of these effects stop occurring when you stop maintaining Dreadtheft.
  • The stacks generated by Curse Synergy with Dreadtheft now cap at 3, down from 5. However, the amount of Damage Resistance granted by each stack has been increased.
  • Updated the rank up information to properly state that it increases the Damage Resistance Debuff by 5% per rank, not 3% as previously stated.
  • Will now properly grant its Curse Synergy effects if a curse is applied after Dreadtheft has started.”

[/su_note]

So for add clearing the suggested rotation is: Fiery Bolt / Pillar of Power / Dreadtheft.Β The key is Pillar + Dread, so if you like something else for the 3rd, feel free to utilize it. πŸ™‚

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]Nothing to add here folks. Feats, Pillar, Dreadtheft, Dread enchantment – it keep you buffing and debuffing like a monster.[/su_box]

For single target / bosses the recommendation goes: Pillar of Power / Dreadtheft / Killing Flames Β or Warlock’s Bargain.

Being able to keep Big Poppa, aka. Pillar of Power, up 24/7, and being able to move in and out of PoP w/Power of the Nine Hells offers you all the mobility you need to avoid CC. The other bonus of this entire shebang is that you get to buff the Party also! Any group who doesn’t want 20-25% more Damage/Damage Resistance 24/7, along w/Dreadtheft’s Damage Increase,Β should follow this advice…

Here are a few screen shots from my toon including feat tree selection, Mount Insignia choices and general stats, so you can see how I personally went w/my Human SW:

 photo Mod10 1_zps0eyli4y8.png

 photo Mod10 2_zpsssges411.png

With the above, I skipped the HP increase because my Lifesteal is almost 35%, but if yours is below 20ish, you may want to take it. I just really like the AP gain from spamming At-Wills such as Essence Defiler or Hellish Rebuke. Also, I think the new Mount Insignia Bonus ‘Assassin’s Convenant’ is pretty snazzy, you should try it out!

Well…

[su_box title=”Fernuu Fun Fact” radius=”0″]Thanks all for reading and effort you done while testing Scourge Warlock rebalance changes! Hope you like our insights :)[/su_box]

And with that, we did thee adieu and hope all your enemies cower in fear at the mention of your name!

Nice, thanks guys for all your hard work. No longer top DPS nuka-cola machine, but honestly I’m happy to take more of a back seat to provide a slightly different role for a change. Also very happy that HB is back in biz.

What offense and defense enchantments should I be running for this and do you still recommend negation and vorpal for the weapon and armor enchantments?

I currently run Brutal’s in Offense and Vicious in Defense slots. For Armor I’d recommend Soulforged until you’re comfortable with a build, then branch out to something w/more utility like Negation/Elven Battle/etc. Weapon is Dread all the way currently, though Vorpal is a fine supplement! πŸ™‚

I go with Air, Fire, Erin, Yeti, Siege with Fire summoned. He works out very nicely. Though, it really should come down to whatever companion gear you have and which companion can make best use of it,

I use Sellsword as summoned companion for extra debuff (and it has 3 Offensive slots).

As active: Erinyes, Cambion, Air Archon, Siege.

Guys check out one more encounter: Arms of Hadar. Seems to be doing pretty decent damage when buffed and linked with TT. Aiming is still pretty bad but it’s worth using.

It certainly is a good Add clearer, so you can definitely rock it if you’d like! Personally I’ll slot it for fun and such, but until we have a situation where we need to really CC things repeatedly, I think Arms of Hadar will remain a novelty at best…

        • August 23, 2016 at 9:46 am
          Permalink

I do remember mentioning it may be solid in testing, question is does it replace Firey Bolt or Dreadtheft in a add clearing rotation… Cause PoP has to stay! lol

          • August 23, 2016 at 9:59 am
            Permalink

            I’m currently using:
            Trash: AoH/FB/PoP
            Single: AoH/KF/PoP

Better damage than Dreadtheft but if you prefer to focus on buffs, DT is still better party-wise.

Will this kind of build be viable pre 3k gs or is it still going to be 3k+. I am currently on ps4 working to get my SW up into the 3000’s before I abandon the puppet build. Also is the LM set a viable choice for this setup or is it still just orcus and only orcus?

    • August 23, 2016 at 5:34 am
      Permalink

I think it is viable, though the play style may require a change in play as you kinda want to be near bad guys (for trash clearing) to get them Debuffed by PoP, but w/a good Tank you should be ok. Solo play may be an issue squishiness wise. Try it out, and if it doesn’t work (though it certainly scales up well!), I’d recommend going the Soulbinder Fury route for a bit more survivability IF it proves to be an issue… As for the Artifact Set, the stats on LM are still solid, but it’s active bonus is pretty trash after the fix. If you can, I’d strongly recommend the Demonic/Orcus set! πŸ™‚

But what do you think of Shadow Demon and Paranoid Delusion?

Another thing: it is my impression or the GF’s buff don’t work as it should on the warlock?
I tried to do twice the same dungeon with the same Gf and Hr. The first time the gf used the buff and Hr did far more damage than mine, however the second time we have done almost as much damage but the Gf has not used the buff.

Well I was always up to Fury build, especially as I did some PvP. For Mod9 DPS damnation is pretty good, but once Mod10 will hit XboX only Fury will matters for damage dealing.

I’m also an Xbox player. Damnation will be inferior DPS in Mod 10 due to the fact that they are fixing the super buggy puppet. Your best bet for builds will be, in my opinion: 1. HB Fury (dps/buffs) 2. SB Fury (dps/survivability) 3. HB Temp (super buffman machine) 4. SB Temp (useable but no compelling reason to choose over HB). I wouldn’t touch Damnation anymore since you don’t really get anything out of that that you can’t anywhere else. Fury and Temp can both offer better DPS, buffs, and survivability than Damnation.

I’m a Hellbringer Fury SW [Oh, I’m not so powerful as you – 27K power, wow! πŸ˜‰ ]

I don’t know what it happening in Module 10… I’m about 5,5k life steal (base value, without mount nor Stronghold bonuses) but in the new maps I don’t feel this feature is working – I’m not restoring my HP as I use to do πŸ™
The feature remains as usual in other maps.

This issue is my char only, or came from game changes, affecting the class in general?? I realized CW character similar feature didn’t change…

Our initial thoughts on HB was to give it a try, as we want to experiment w/all available options and the changes to Pillar of Power looked really good for solo and team play.

Tyrannical Curse, aka. the old TT, is still a superb power for damage, particularly solo target on a boss.

Dread is definitely the enchantment to go for! I’ve found Lifesteal to be awesome, Fernuu I believe has a lot less and went more HP for defensive measures… Either way is viable honestly!

The Owlbear is absolutely amazing, currently, for this build as Pillar of Power does not crit and every second an enemy is in the circle they take 50% of your power as damage… That’s pretty friggin good! πŸ˜‰

However, it is an expensive pet currently, and we have no idea what the Devs may do in the future with it… So I’d be weary of investing 8mil AD (currently what a Epic Owlbear is going for on the PC Auction House) into it unless you have money to burn.

The last guide I read was for a soulbinder damnation warlock and it recommended the heavy howler mount. Is that still a good choice given the updates or would you recommend another? Also how do you recommend breaking the addiction of the soul puppet? I haven’t played as another paragon path. Thanks for your help.

Someone mentioned Templock pve. Could you post a link to it?(updated mod 10 please). I really think a buf/debuf/healer/dps/ little tank is posible to make. And shurely be a fix on the templock path. And I wana sart testing. Ive done templock before but never over 2.4 Γtem level, so now im ready(3k). And why Hb over Soulb?

I don’t have a Templock build currently, I’d suggest checking out The Nine Hells SW Class forum on the NW forums. Also, HB over SB for this Build as the Owlbear is really good for it. However, now w/Assault on Svardborg a pure DPS SB/Fury build is perfectly viable also.

Personally, I’m more of a PvP player than PvE, and usually only do PvE if it’s necessary (So like artifacts and shards usually). Do you know any good builds for PvP? I’ve heard PoP,FB, and Hellish Rebuke are good for PvP, but i’m just wondering if you would change anything else at all or not. Also Ps4 has just released Mod 10 fairly recently, so nothing past that if that changes anything. Thanks!

Oh yeah also forgot to say that I’m going with a pure DPS build,so fury HB. But that doesn’t change much, if anything as far as the feats in your build. Also, i’m kind of torn between Dread and Vorpal enchant, since I’m planning on high crit, so i’m just wondering if I would get more of my damage from encounters or from at-wills, since that’s basically what the difference comes down to. Also what armor enchant should I use? sorry for all the questions lol, if you don’t want to write a full paragraph on what i’ve asked you then short answers would be fine too. Thank you!

OMG okay last question, had it in mind and then forgot it, but what do you recommend removing from heroic feats if you’re not a human, and what is the best race for SW? I’m a drow for the 10% defense reduction chance, but wondering if I should just delete and start over (Since this character is only 33 rn), and there’s 2XXP event on now so it won’t take me long to get back to this point if I do. Thanks so much!

For PvP, I’d 100% suggest the HP ones and drop from the AP gain from At Wills if necessary.

If HB, I can see Vorpal as Pillar of Power cannot crit, however for SB (and arguably HB) Dread is super duper good w/giving the Encounter Powers more damage as that’s really your hardest hitting nuking, particularly with Killing Flames/Murderous Flames feat.

Armor? I’d suggest Soulforged or Elven Battle. Negation is meh, because Damage Resistance doesn’t really matter when everyone is rolling around with Max ArmPen.

For PvP I’d suggest Soulbinder simply because of Borrowed Times heal effect, and how Soul Sparks now slowly fade away after combat instead of instantly. Which is really nice for SB!

Now HB w/Pillar of Power is a nice defensive utility versus Melee classes, though less useful versus CWs/HRs.

OK, Thanks a lot! So HP encounters are things like Warlock’s bargain and Vampiric Embrace right?

Also for Class Features, you only mentioned Borrowed Time. should my other be Dark one’s blessing or something else?

I’d do All Consuming Curse always, and 2nd whatever you’d like… Borrowed Time is good for survivability.

Do you mean HB? For that I would suggest Pillar of Power/Fiery Bolt/Arms of Hadar for trash, and Pillar of Power/Killing Flames/Whatever you’d like…

I’d avoid Vampiric Embrace since its pretty much utter trash, even in Temptation, but Warlocks Bargain is pretty good!

Yeah for PvP I’ve been using (Since I switched to SB because I got a re-spec token from a bag in the winter event so I thought why not) Killing Flames/Dreadtheft/Warlock’s Bargain, for my encounters, and Borrowed Time with Dark One’s Blessing for Features (Then the obvious HoB and Essence Defiler for my At-wills). only using DoB is because i’m not 70 yet (Or 65 when you can get all consuming), I’m just getting ganged up on a lot and can’t get rid of the other 2 or 3 people who are constantly stunning me which sucks.

omg I just wrote something and deleted it all on accident XD but medium story more medium than before, soulbinder appears (From what the lvl 70 SW’s on ps4 are saying) to now be inferior to HB because of the upgraded PoP, so there’s that half lol. Other half was a question:Is Hadar’s Grasp any good? because if it’s total trash i’d like to not spend points on it or waste my time with it

oh well nvm apparently it still submitted and I can see it’s nothing like what I thought I said lol, but as for the Stuns I’m definetely going for Elven battle enchant so less worries there!

Oh yes my other question lol. I’m a Drow for the Darkfire effect which has a 5% chance to lower the target’s defense by 10% for 4 seconds, so am I good as far as race or is it complete trash compared to Tiefling? I might’ve asked you what race to pick already actually lol, and I know you’re a human for the 3 extra heroic points so are any of those 3 good or just tiefling and human?

Honestly, overall DPS, I believe the Tiefling race is the best w/that extra 5%…

Though I know some SWs who use the Dragonborn also for the extra power.

I just couldn’t take the tail wiggling all over the place, and figured Human’s Extra 3 Heroic Points was worth a try a while ago.

Honestly, race wise, I’d do what you like best flavor wise, and I’m not sure if the Darkfire from the Drow would be better in PvP then the Tiefling. Really depends on how it procs and it’s up-time.

Ya, Elven Battle is good for anti-CC, particularly in PvP… Though having the extra life from Soulforged, isn’t something to just dismiss. Both are viable IMO.

Well upgraded PoP needs to be taken into account w/the Owlbear Companion which REALLY makes it shine. However, full disclosure, the Owlbear could be changed at any time by the Devs…

Hadar’s Grasp is a good solo-target DPS encounter, particularly for HB.

What would be a good build for DPS and Survivability? Would that be the SB Fury spec? Outside of the fury where do the other ponits going?\

    I mostly just Solo

    Great Guide – thanks!

Both HB Fury and SB Fury are good for DPS/Survivability.

I’d say that SB edges out HB, based on the use of Borrowed Time and that Everfrost damage pierces the DR you gain from Pillar of Power (HB Encounter), but they both can be useful.

      Hope that helps!
