Module 13 Preview: Soulmonger’s Lockbox, New Companions & Mounts

As part of our extensive preview of Neverwinter’s “Lost City of Omu”, we are looking at the upcoming Soulmonger’s Lockbox and new Companions and Mounts today. With each update comes a new lockbox, and Module 13 is no different. It features a new legendary prize, and a couple interesting updates to the blue line of drops. So let’s get right to it and see what your Enchanted Keys are able to net you after February 27th.

Soulmonger’s Lockbox

The setup of the Soulmonger’s Lockbox is pretty common. It features a legendary and epic Triceratops Mount as well as a new Infant Gorilla as additional epic reward. As Augment Companion the gorilla will probably see little use in endgame, but could become a nice low-cost alternative for alts. With two offensive and three ring slots, it’s one of the easier companions to gear. The legendary Triceratops in the meantime is the first Mount to feature +16,000 HP as equip bonus. So far several epic Mounts only offered +8,000. Here’s the full list of possible rewards:

  • War Triceratops Mount
  • Triceratops Mount
  • Infant Gorilla Augment Companion
  • Forgotten Enchantment Pack
  • Lost Artifact Pack
  • Carapace Mount Pack
  • Adventurer Pack
  • Genie’s Gift
  • The Quartermaster’s Professions Pack
  • Tarmalune Trade Bar Jackpot

No Companion Pack

The blue line of rewards has also been tweaked considerably. Next to the usual Enchantement, Artifact and Mount Pack, the Companion Pack is a noticeable absentee. That does not only mean that you’ll have to get Companion Tokens and Bondings from somewhere else, but also that a good amount of refining points has been scratched from the lockbox. Overall the decision is understandable though. Companion Packs for the longest time featured pets that nobody really needed.

The Lost Artifact Pack remains unchanged and the Enchantment Pack has Bilethorn and Fireburst, which probably won’t excite too many players. The Mount Pack however does feature not less than six new Mounts and skins. The Insignias that drop from the first reward tier, and have a chance to be epic, are of type “C”. The ones that drop from the second reward tier, and are blue only, are of type “A”.

Revamped Blue Rewards

Genie’s Gifts and a Professions Pack is back with the Soulmonger’s Lockbox, and for good reason. Profession Assets have risen in price considerably, and this will definitely help with the supply. Note that because Profession Packs from the ZEN Market are stupidly overpriced, lockboxes essentially are the only source of assets nowadays. Players will also be able to buy new stuff with Genie’s Gifts, but we’ll cover that in a different article.

I’m not sure what to make out of the new Adventurer Pack. To be honest, I think it might become a fail like the Ascendant Fashion Pack. I guess the potions are nice and all, but you rarely use Life Scrolls and Health Stones in endgame for example. The ones you get for free in events over the year are more than enough to cover multiple toons. The second tier looks like a poor man’s VIP subscription. I have more than enough keys and ID scrolls, no thanks.

Other Companions and Mounts

The module will introduce a couple more Companions and Mounts. First and foremost, the endgame will probably receive a new meta component in the “Chultan Tiger”. It has the same stacking debuff as the Con Artist and Sellsword, comes with an additional damage bonus as Active Bonus, has three offensive slots and two ring and a neck slot. Ain’t that nice? You will be able to buy this one from the ZEN market for approximately around 3,000 ZEN. The Alpha Compy is not technically new, but hasn’t been released yet. So I’ve attached it here (again).

As for Mounts, there are two new colored ones that will probably be included in a ZEN promotion similar to this one. So it’s on you whether you want to spend real money on unique skins. Since both are unbound, you should however also be able to get them for a reasonable price on the Auction House as well.

Shame about the Companion Packs. I was opening them on the same character to pool the Upgrade Tokens, and the occasional rank 8 and 9 Runestones were nice.

So the Upgrade Tokens are useless now, as we cannot upgrade a Companion partly with Tokens and make up the difference with AD? That is something the Devs should be strongly encouraged to address: equate Upgrade Tokens to the AD price for upgrading a rank and allow us to “Mix ‘n’ Match”. I have wished for a long time that we could put them in the Bank, like we now can with Trade Bars.

No new Insignia Bonuses? Probably a good thing, although the epic Zen mount ones are pretty samey.

I kind of like the War Triceratops, but I wish they would make a selection of Account-Wide Legendary Mounts available on the Zen Market at an equitable price, like the Epic Mounts.

At 500 for Uncommon, 2000 for Rare and 3500 for Epic, 5000 for Legendary seems reasonable. I’d pay that for a Tenser’s Floating Disk!

Realistically, the most unusual and exotic mounts they would probably keep as extreme rarities, but I’d buy a less exotic and OP one for 5000 Zen, even if only for the 140% speed boost. And it’s daft for an Epic Zen mount to have Cavalry’s Warning when they have no Combat Power.

I wish I had got that Stormraider Clydesdale for 1750 Zen before they revised the prices and introduced Insignia bonuses. That +2000 Run Speed would be really nice for some of my more sluggish characters!

I’m with you. They could have simply done away with the junk companions and kept them in for the tokens. I’m not one to tinfoil hat it but the only reasoning is to stick to the zen store or AD.

Wow, that blue rage drake looks like something I am going to be buying lol.

And about the life scrolls and health stones, I wonder if all the people who were raging about having their health stones consume 2 charges per use were a primary driver for this. I saw so many more people who were upset about this happening than I had ever expected. Apparently a lot of people use them way more often than i thought (i still have every free health stone they ever gave out for free). I’ve also seen people complaining about the high cost of scrolls of life and how they were always out of said scrolls on reddit and the forums so this sounds like one of those things the CM picked up on and passed on to the devs.

5000 zen for legendary mountmwill never happen. You get 50 keys for 5000 zen now so youyare saying that legendary mounts are worth the same as 50 keys. Well even less since you want them to be account wide also. With the summer sale the legendary mount would drop to 2500 zen. TheTprices of legendary mounts would go down the draindand nobody would buy keys anymore.

Do you really think that people buy keys to try and get a Legendary mount? How stupid are they?

And why did people buy them before there was any such thing as a Legendary mount? Well, back in the day, when Zen was 300 AD, the keys paid for themselves with those old Rusted Lockboxes etc. An Astral Diamond Resonator got more than the cost of a key by itself. I got most of my Heroes for Leadership and Grandmaster Alchemists from those old boxes.

Anyway, as I said, the most rare, exotic and OP Legendary mounts would still be in the boxes, like there are many, many Epic and Rare mounts in lockboxes that are not on the Auctions House. I did say a selection, not all of them. And they could rework content and drop rates on boxes as well.

I’ve not bought any keys for years. Just not worth the cost.

Chultan tiger doesn’t have the same debuff as the con artist. According to how it is written. It increases your damage dealt. It doesn’t remove DR from the enemy.

Let’s say you have the chultan tiger it gives you 10% extra damage on a 10000 point hit. That 10% increase come out to 11000 points.(Remember this is only if the bleed lands and only if the tiger has combat advantage.) The bosses have 185% DR. Let’s remove your Armor pen, at top end its usually around 85% that leaves 100% DR remaining. So 11000 damage is reduced to 0 because the boss still has 100% DR.

Now let’s look at the conartist. He removes 10% of the bosses DR. Add that to your 85% Armor Pen and now you have punched through 95% of the bosses defenses so 10000 point hit now let’s in 5% damage 500 points.

None of this includes cleric debuffs or Dinosaur mount combat power. Mathematically the Tiger is not a replacement for the conartist. It’s additive to group that already has a few con artists in it.

Bosses have 85% DR not 185%. The con artist DR shred is not actually removing DR from the boss, it is creating a 10% debuff which gives you 10% more damage in a vaccum exactly the same way that the tiger does.

The tiger has been well tested on preview in it’s current form and barring any changes from the devs before the mod launches it will be a direct con artist/sellsword replacement.

There are two main differences between a DR debuff and a damage buff :

1- DR debuffs are additive with each other while damage buffs are mutliplicative with everything else
2- DR debuffs have diminishing returns (what the devs wrongly called a cap), the more you apply the less you actually get

Taking only the additive aspect into account, with the rebel/con/sword debuff, if the target already has 50% DR debuff (which is easily reached in a group) your damage will be multiplied by 1.6.

In the same situation, with the chultan tiger buff, your damage will be mutliplied by 1.5*1.1=1.65.

1.65/1.6=1.031 you’ll do roughly 3% more damage with the tiger.

Here, of course, I’m assuming that the tooltip is right and that it actually is a damage buff and not a DR debuff. Many DR debuffs have a tooltip that says “increase damage” instead of “reduce defense”.

The screenshot for the tiger is missing its second attack skill which is 160° cone attack with 12s cooldown which applies its bleed effect regardless of combat advantage.

But yeah, we had all better start storing zen to get ourselves a tiger once mod13 kicks in. At least it doesn’t come from a scambox.

Scrap that, it actually is a DR debuff, not a damage buff :/
