Neverwinter Heart of Fire Datamining Bonus Edition: Tales of Old Event

Neverwinter “Heart of Fire” has finally launched on the PC version of the game and Unblogged has technically finished its preview series of the module. But, there’s still one major event left that we have to go through. Originally the “Tales of Old” format was planned to appear on the datamining post, but the amount of details around the new event warrants a full own post. So here is what we found!

First of all, what are the “Tales of Old”? It’s an event that brings back old dungeons in a competitive PVE format. Players have to speed-run the content for rewards. But simply stomping through dungeons won’t be the most effective way of doing so. Instead, you have to explore side areas and collect so-called power-ups that extend lives or the time limit. We’ve mentioned it before, but the first four dungeons of the new series will be:

  • Frozen Heart
  • Throne of Idris
  • Lair of the Mad Dragon
  • Dread Vault

Power-Ups And Difficulty Increase

We weren’t able to dig up details about the Power-Ups you’re going to collect, but as mentioned we assume it’s simply increasing lives of the group and the time limit. Groups probably have 60 minutes for one “try” and if they either die too often or run out of time, they’ll lose. We however have some hints that groups might be tasked to run a dungeon a total amount of five times with increasing difficulty within the time limit. Here are some strings from the game files that list the restrictions:

  • Run 1: Limited Consumables
  • Run 2: Restrictions of previous runs + No Artifacts
  • Run 3: Restrictions of previous runs + At-Wills cause damage to you
  • Run 4: Restrictions of previous runs + Power cooldown increased + Enemies attacks poisonous
  • Run 5: Restrictions of previous runs + Power and defense reduced by 50%

The game files feature icons that indicate a five-step process as well.

Artifact Rewards

Let’s also talk rewards a little. During the event players collect a “tales” currency. One of the reward boxes by the way seems to be a homage to Lead Designer Thomas “Mimic King” Foss, who always wanted to bring the old dungeons back. We’ll let you figure out which one of the pictured two it could be.

With the currency you can probably buy rewards in an event store, but also a line of new event-specific Artifacts feature more effects the more “tales” you add to it. So getting through all tiers of the “Tales of Old” might mean you’ll end up with a stronger Artifact in the end. There are five powers to match the suspected five difficulty tiers. Each dungeons has its own unique Artifact, but so far only the ones for Frozen Heart and Lair of the Mad Dragon are finalized, indicating that these dungeons might be the first players get.

* […] are placeholders and will be replaced with actual values in the final version.

[su_box title=”Frozen Heart”]Activating this artifact summons forth an enchanted tome filled with the records of your exploits within frozen heart. When empty it will do [magnitude] cold damage to all targets in a 25ft radius of the targeted area. Adding tales to the journal will add more powers to it:

  • A Tale of Ice: Adds a stackable effect that increases every time you do damage. After 15 seconds your next attack will do additional 5% cold weapon damage times the number of stacks and snare the target.
  • A Tale of Awe: Stuns enemies within a 25ft radius around the targeted area for [duration].
  • A Tale of Support: Summons three ice dwarves to fight by your side for [duration].
  • A Tale of Resilience: Increases your defense by [magnitude]%.
  • Hriminir’s Demise: Increases you and your allies’ damage by [magnitude]% for [duration].[/su_box]

[su_box title=”Throne of Idris”]Activating this artifact summons forth an enchanted tome filled with the records of your exploits within the lair of the mad dragon. When empty it will do [magnitude] damage to all targets in a 25ft radius of the targeted area. Adding tales to the journal will add more powers to it:

  • A Tale of Poison: Adds a stackable effect that increases every time you do damage. After 15 seconds your next attack will do additional 5% weapon damage times the number of stacks.
  • A Tale of Awe: Stuns enemies within a 25ft radius around the targeted area for [duration].
  • A Tale of Madness: Summons a small projection of Chartilifax that will seek out your enemies dealing [magnitude] poison damage every second. After dealing damage 5 times to any number of foes or after 15 seconds, the projection explodes dealing [magnitude] damage.
  • A Tale of Power: Increases your damage by [magnitude]%.
  • The Final Chapter: Generates [magnitude] AP every second for [duration].[/su_box]

Artifact Gear and Set Rewards

But that’s not everything! The Artifacts themselves come with a set bonus that increases in potency the more different “Journal” Artifacts you have equipped:

  • Set of 2: Increase [attribname] by [magnitude] and [attribname] by [magnitude]. These values increase for every journal that is equipped.
  • Set of 3: Do an additional hit for Weapon Damage on a Critical hit. (same as Lostmauth set)

There are also two new “Tales” Artifact Neck and Waist gear pieces that combine with an unknown Artifact to a set bonus as well:

  • Set of 2: Increases all attributes by 1.
  • Set of 3: Your powers have a chance to deal additional unresistable damage equal to 10% of your weapon damage.

We’re not sure whether the “Journal” Artifacts are supposed to be pieces of the “Tales” bonus as well. Although it’s certainly possible that items are part of different sets, it’s not likely. So we might simply be missing something here. In any case players will be able to play around with new gear and bonuses from the new event format.

Tales Enchantment

Also of interest for all you min/maxers and build theorycrafters is a new “Tales” Enchantment that will supposedly only drop from the event. We can’t say anything about the type of stats, but if we’re not mistaken it’s going to be a three-stat Enchantment.

Really hope we can also run the dungeons in a casual way. And yet how freaking long do they expect us to run the same dungeon over and over. I run end game but have never been much of a fan of speed runs. And now with no salvage gear and 2x RP they took away the main reason to speed run. Why are the devs so clueless this feature will only be for just a few players will get old very quick and many will complain that they can not find a group that can do it.

Crikey! This is not what I was expecting.

Can we just run those dungeons anyway? And will they be in the Random Queues for AD?

I’d really love to try Throne of Idris, Lair of the Mad Dragon and Dread Vault again. In fact, they should be put back into the main quest line.

In fact, they should never have been taken out. Mod 6 should have been delayed for 6 months until it was fixed.

    🙂

I also hate speed runs, so feck that for a game of soldiers.

people hating on speed runs are just people that can’t do it basicly speed runs require everyone to know what they are doing and not waste time in dungeon cooking or something god knows what
so yeah personally i like this addition and it’s nice to see old dungeons as i joined the game after they were removed so i enver had the chance to play them or even try them out for that matter so i think it will be a very pelasant thing

There are also those of us who CAN do Speed runs and have done them since Mod 2, including Epic Dread Vault, but don’t like them anyway.

“Unknown” [gotta love the bravery of anonymity] said “people hating on speed runs are just people that can’t do it “.

    Nope. Wrong.
    Ditto to Contractions of Fate.
I can do speed runs, “unknown”.
I just do not enjoy them.
Neither do many other highly geared and experienced players.
That is not the same as “hating”.

Basing a “Mod X.5” on speed runs will naturally disengage a portion of your player base… just like basing a Mod X.5 on [shudder] fishing.
