Neverwinter Playstation Release FAQ: Dungeons & Dragons

The Neverwinter Playstation release is right around the corner and many new players are probably asking themselves whether it’s worth to give the game a look. It’s completely free, so the risks are low. Some players however like to know what they can expect down the road and for those we have answered a few essential questions in the last weeks.

Neverwinter Playstation Release Date

To conclude our Playstation Release FAQ we are looking at the lore of Neverwinter. We are sure many players want to look into the game because they like the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. But how many D&D elements does the game actually feature? And can it deliver a Faerûn feeling?

Modified 4th Edition ruleset

Neverwinter is based on a modified 4th edition ruleset. The ability to transfer pen and paper characters to the game is limited by the available races and classes. Cryptic is aligning their story content to those of WotC however, so you are most likely able to play the latest campaigns online and offline.

The world design is decent. The main setting of the game is the Sword Coast, but you visit other areas of the continent sporadically in campaigns, quests or dungeons. Map-making is one of the strength of the game and most of the areas should be recognizable. The devs received a lot of praise throughout the years about how they transferred certain locations to the game and it’s easy to agree here. The world is growing slow, but its growing. Most players are probably missing a few of their popular places, but will find other ones.

Unfortunately the instanced setup of the game takes away a lot of immersion capabilities. It would make a ton of difference if players could actually explore Faerûn in an open world setting. But this is probably nothing we’ll see in Neverwinter as the game engine is not build for it.

Many popular characters

Over the course of the modules many popular characters have made it to the game: Drizzt, Minsc and others. That’s a plus, but you could say they are underutilized. Players should have more possibilities to interact with those heros and experience something with them. They are part of the campaigns, but play comparably small roles.

The best implementation might actually be the one of Chris Perkins. We don’t want to spoil too much, so be on the lookout!

Currently no supported DM functionalities

When talking D&D you can’t dodge DMing features. Neverwinter theoretically has a great toolset in the foundry, but there’s a rather big “but” for all those that hope to bring their adventures online: It is currently no longer a supported feature. Back in 2013 the foundry and the ability to create user generated content was one of the major selling points. Much has changed since then. There will be no updates to the foundry this year and it’s uncertain whether there ever will be. It’s up right now, but do not expect any support or bugfixes. It’s a shame that of all things a D&D game cut such a feature.

Neverwinter has always received criticism that it only uses the Forgotten Realms lore, but fails to really create an immersive world for D&D veterans. Overall it’s surely more a classic MMO with a D&D touch than a true D&D MMO. The places and characters are there however and there’s no doubt fans of the franchise should enjoy this game more than others.

That’s it folks! We hoped the series was able to help you determine whether Neverwinter is a game you’d like to give a shot. Have fun with the release today and make sure to share questions and remarks in the comments below. You can also visit the corresponding thread on our message board.
