Relentless Becomes the First Maxed Alliance on PC

Today it’s time to congratulate the Relentless Alliance for reaching an alliance level of 260. All 13 guilds in Relentless now feature the maximum possible Guild Hall 20. To our knowledge it’s the first alliance to reach perfection on PC and possible even only the second one after the Legendary Outlaws across all platforms. In any case it’s a superb achievement and worth a shout-out.

Has the Alliance Structure Failed?

This also consolidates Relentless as PC’s top PVE alliance. Right from the start they made clear that they would strife for longevity and getting all guilds up to GH20. This is especially noteworthy since the devs didn’t design alliances to work that way. It’s a top to bottom system with Helm Guilds getting the best benefits. That way the devs wanted to encourage Sword and Gauntlet Guilds to eventually become Helm Guilds of their own alliances.

Two years later, it’s evident that the approach has failed. Building a strong community and playerbase through alliances is such a motivating factor that any decent alliance rotates the guild to the Helm spot that needs it the most. Guilds normally only switch alliances to join a more powerful one, not to create their own. When alliances were introduced some players already foresaw this development and warned the devs that the best guilds would eventually just team up. Labeled as “small risk” back then, it has long become a common practice.

Congrats to Relentless

Anyway, this is not so much about discussing the alliance system but saluting Relentless for reaching level 260! If you’re looking for a GH20 guild for your account, then Relentless is a very good place to start searching.

We are excited to be there, everyone in our alliance has worked very hard for this achievement! Having such an active alliance chat is fantastic, and all our guild leaders have worked hard for this, including running contests and such. Now we just wish there was some new stronghold content 🙂

Excellent achievement, that must have taken a huge amount of effort.

“When alliances were introduced some players already foresaw this development and warned the devs that the best guilds would eventually just team up.”

Is there any record of the Developers ever listening, and paying the slightest attention, to people who actually play the game, ever?

The “surprising” thing is, the exact same thing happened in Star Trek Online and they said they don’t think alliances will have the same effect. So it’s not only not trusting players, but their own experience. Easy guess: Another structure won’t net them nearly as much money 😀

Alliances are for community and friendships, not bonuses.

While we wouldn’t disagree, many PC guilds are GH20 at this point, and not all of them have spent money to get there. It’s just a matter of finding 13 guilds that are willing to work together that way.

As a Guild Leader for Ancient Warriors, money was not really a factor. If it was, HW would have hit GH20 many months ago. Look at the Members count and understand that most of the guilds focus on active players rather than just accounts. Active players contribute with or without a donation quota (I’m not aware of any Relentless guilds having mandatory donation quotas – particularly now that we are all capped). Guild Marks remain profitable (this site has a good recent article on the topic) and when your own guild’s mimic is full or you don’t need anything, contributing to an alliance guild is a good way to continue to acquire them. The Alliance leadership also did a lot to encourage support for the guilds still leveling and there were many Alliance-wide events to gather resources (thanks Rhysling for all the Dragon Flights). During the final push, I’m having a hard time remembering when CRN wasn’t hosting a Marauders event. There are also a lot of cross-guild friendships and a lot of good humor in alliance chat as well as helpful information for members. It’s a good escape from the chatter in PE, which is awash in spam, misinformation, and mindless jibber jabber (e.g., the flat-Earth ranter).

bla bla bla…we all know how guilds “leveled” up in the past and what members had to do for it.

One point to note, Helm Guilds do get the highest structure cost discount, which is significant, but Gauntlet Guilds get the highest EXP bonus (Swords Guilds are a medium between the two). Once your guild is no longer producing structures, the EXP bonus is more worthwhile, though not as prestigious.

I do agree that the designers missed the mark if they were looking for ways to spawn more Alliances. Alliance communities are often stronger than the general game community (better overall player base due to selective recruiting and boon structures as well as better information and training for members), which creates a disincentive to leave an alliance except to migrate to a stronger alliance, as this article mentions. The high cost in terms of time and resources to build the Stronghold structures also creates a disincentive as you lose a portion of your bonuses by migrating to a weaker alliance or starting over. However, I’m not sure all of the strongest guilds have gravitated together as egos and drama often prevent combinations of the most powerful, though enough sufficiently strong guilds do appear to be able to cooperate and develop their own sense of community, which is often to the exclusion of the broader game community. I know I rarely group outside my friends list or alliance.

i have been a part of The Holy Crusaders since very early in the Strongholds addition, my original guild was decimated by EE mod, THC/TUC/Relentless has been a pleasure to run with. A lot of work was put in to reach this point and i am happy to be a part of it.

They were able to keep the guild at max level just long Andorra Bell to get this back-patting in before VA left the alliance.

It doesn’t necessarily take $$ to be this elite. Remember Lia being banned for using third-party vendor?
How about the mass-suspensions for botting that removed a significant chunk of THC/TUC leadership for two weeks?
Totally not spending money in game to be awesome.

Simple evidence that good guilds and alliances can have terrible human beings in it.
