Say What? D&D’s New Ravnica Setting is a Magic: The Gathering Crossover

Wizards of the Coast officially released and announced two new publications on Monday. The first one adopts the older campaign setting “Ebberon” to the 5th edition and is already available as digital download on Dungeon Masters Guild.

Ravnica Is a Magic: The Gathering Crossover

The other one in the meantime will come in November and is equally interesting for Wizards of the Coast and Cryptic Studios. Because the campaign setting detailed in the “Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica” is a Magic: The Gathering crossover.

[su_quote cite=”PCGamer” url=”https://www.pcgamer.com/dungeons-and-dragons-new-setting-is-a-magic-the-gathering-crossover/”]Ravnica is a city the size of a world ruled by ten scheming, competing guilds, each of which represents a combination of two of Magic’s colors of mana and regulated by powerful, world-spanning magic called the Guildpact.[/su_quote]

While this is not truly the first attempt to do a crossover, it is the first full-sized campaign book that mixes both worlds. Here’s the flavor text from the official WotC product page:

[su_quote]A perpetual haze of dreary rain hangs over the spires of Ravnica. Bundled against the weather, the cosmopolitan citizens in all their fantastic diversity go about their daily business in bustling markets and shadowy back alleys. Through it all, ten guilds—crime syndicates, scientific institutions, church hierarchies, military forces, judicial courts, buzzing swarms, and rampaging gangs—vie for power, wealth, and influence. These guilds are the foundation of power on Ravnica. They have existed for millennia, and each one has its own identity and civic function, its own diverse collection of races and creatures, and its own distinct subculture. Their history is a web of wars, intrigue, and political machinations as they have vied for control of the plane.[/su_quote]

What Does It Mean for Neverwinter?

For Cryptic Studios and Neverwinter this could potentially have interesting ramifications. The devs as you might know work on a second WotC licensed MMO based on the Magic universe and Ravnica suddenly opens the door of connecting Neverwinter and the yet-to-be-released new title. Could this mean that a “Ravnica” module in Neverwinter launches simultaneously with the MtG game as crossover promo? Or will players even be able to visit the same zone in their respective games and at least see and talk to each other? The latter feels difficult to pull off, but Ravnica certainly offers all sorts of speculation!
