The Lowbie Diaries Vol. 15: Campaign And Gold Issues

Welcome to a new project, experiment, challenge or whatever you wanna call it. Normally experiencing the content with well-geared toons, I figured it would be quite interesting to approach the game from the perspective of a casual player. How does it feel starting from scratch and build up a character without the help of your mains? How long does it take until you are geared enough for the latest endgame content? Welcome to the Lowbie Diaries, it should be fun!

Because the site was on a short holiday break, this diary will not cover the latest weekly progress but some aspects of what happened over the last few weeks.

The great thing about a lowbie is that you sometimes run into issues you were not aware even existed. It’s amazing because that’s exactly the perspective I was hoping to get when starting such a project.

The first wall I slowly ran into is called boon books. They are missing left and right. I was able to loot one On Madness for Underdark so far and that’s it. Normally I would just buy them off the AH and call it a day, but if 50k is actually a major investment for a character, you will try to farm for it first. Especially Haarl and Spelunking seem to be a severe bottleneck of their respective campaigns. You can get Haarl from the campaign store, but the price is completely delusional.

Due to a bug in the Underdark campaign you can currently get the fourth boon with the last boon task, because each task does not unlock a specific tier but the next available one. So you can actually skip Dwarven Spelunking and still get four boons. That doesn’t change the fact though that the campaign “progress” is a bit misleading because there’s a good chance you will still need to grind for the books after finishing everything else.

This also feels too much like a trap for players, because the design makes you believe a campaign is doable faster than what’s actually being the case. So players get impatient and throw around AD. Maybe that’s just me and my cashgrabophobia though and otherwise you have to say that the overall length of solo campaigns is really reasonable. I already have finished Dread Ring, am about to finish Icewind Dale and only lack tier 5s of Fury of the Feywild, Underdark and Tyranny.

The second thing I noticed was how my gold suddenly began to vanish. I hit 70 with 150 gold and instantly stopped picking up trash, because for me gold is a very dispensable resource in the game. You always have too much of it. Turns out that’s not necessarily the case when you’re doing a lot of campaign tasks. I’m really a fan of campaign keys because they net extra AD and extra RPs. Doing one key in each campaign per day really brings you close to the refining cap. Add Underdark and you are probably covered. I think it’s not something everybody has the time to do, but circling through dungeons with keys is really the most effective way to reach the cap.

Anyway, all tasks combined easily cost 10-15 gold per day, which has to be earned. So I started picking up greens, potions and treasure again and sell them frequently. It’s enough to cover the costs, but I would definitely not have thought that gold could be an issue.

I also ‘completed’ epic Demogorgon and got my first Ichor. Did one bronze and one silver reward, but won’t be coming back too early. I died like 20 times and couldn’t contribute much. I will definitely buy the Drowcraft armor pieces now and see whether this is going to help.

See you next week!
