Unblogged Wisdom Checks: Should Content Creators Be More Positive About the Game to Get Officially Supported?

Yesterday we covered the hot-ish take by IntegrityGames about Huntgate. In his reasoning he came up with that “healthy streamer” argument that is spread by game officials and mods and we’d like to pick up the topic in this week’s poll. So what this is basically about is that the Community Manager and some others are claiming that the current set of content creators, especially the YouTube scene, are too negative to support. They want more positive/healthy streamers that work as advocates for the game.

You could very well reason that it’s a valid point. Streamers that bash the game all the time might generally not get too many new peeps into the game. And yes, most of the current guys speak their mind, but isn’t showcasing the game on Twitch already helpful? Whenever we look around YouTube and Twitch we see a dedicated bunch of people that create content for a very small audience. They may not be perfect, but since not many new are emerging, you might as well work with what you have? Or do you agree with PWE and Cryptic ignoring content creators for now until someone they like rolls around?

Should Content Creators Be More Positive About the Game to Get Officially Supported?

  • Nope. The devs should be glad that their small game is extensively covered and embrace it! (32%, 126 Votes)
  • Probably, but there's too much black and white thinking involved. If somebody puts out more helpful than harmful content, they should be supported. (29%, 114 Votes)
  • Definitely. People can't expect support from a game they're constantly bashing. (25%, 99 Votes)
  • Maybe. Positive content is better, but any coverage for the game is a plus. (13%, 50 Votes)

For me it’s not negativity or not. I don’t want to see constant brown nosing, or pink glasses, when it’s clear as day that the game has crapton of issues, some of those are rotting and smelling for miles and only getting worse.
Yet, at the same time I don’t want to see someone constantly repeating the same bashing, over and over and over.. We all know the issues.. why I would want to hear a broken record ? Or why the streamer plays the game? Because they get less views in other games/channels?

Streamers, at least for me, is about entertainment, insight, or information. I guess others look for other things…
I do watch larger streams in Dota, from 10k+ viewers for the privates to 100k+ for tournaments, and used to watch sc2 when it was bigger, and it’s a different world out there.

In any case, official promotion of a streamer shouldn’t be conditional on their positivity, a streamer shouldn’t be afraid to loose whatever is that they get by saying what they think about changes or the game. But at the same time a minimal level of professionalism should be expected, in the general way they conduct themselves, from a streamer that is officially promoted.

Content creators should be true to themselves. I think authenticity is important. If selling out to what the mob wants to hear or tailoring content to get endorsements from the game developers is in line with their ideology/morals, so be it. There is space in the marketplace for both sides. The only question is if your market share is great enough to warrant your effort.

We all know when we are someone is pandering, the only question is if we want to hear it

Another way of saying this is that they don’t want people to actually review their thoughts on the game. What they want are unpaid advertisers.

    Thats not a healthy strategy.

My take on the game is typically pretty positive because I want to keep this game alive. Yes there are negatives, but there’s no need to constantly focus on those imho. Not saying I’m brown nosing, just that I try to take a step back whenever theres something odd is going on.

without all the bugs would be less hard to be positive streamers, but if a new dungeon (the only thing that can be shown at the end) is bugged as hell, all the time, mudule after module, its quite difficult to say something positive.
MSP is 5 mods old and still bugged to the limit, and next mod it will be part of the K-team hardcore challenge, so what do we have to expect? how many teams will be able to complete it?
this kind of infos cannot be covered..

if you have a dead horse its impossible to act like its a race champion, or not?
