Unblogged Wisdom Checks: What Type of Goods Would You Be Willing to Give up for Your Guild?

In this week’s poll we’d like to pick up a hot-ish topic we saw popping up on Twitter. A user complained that a guild leader wants all members to buy a ZEN pack as “activity check”. It certainly feels like a made-up argument (why not just send a mail as ping back?), but more than that raises the question whether or not guild leaders should be allowed to demand real-money purchases for the guild.

This isn’t as uncommon as you might think. In the earlier days of Strongholds many ambitious endgame guilds wanted ZEN packs as buy-in. Others even required a monthly donation, or you would get kicked. It by the way isn’t against the terms of service as GrizzlyWookie suggests. It’s not legally wrong, just might be morally. Or is it? Share your opinion in taking part in our weekly poll! As always you can also post your opinion in the comments below, or on our message board!

I would leave the guild of any leader demanding players to purchase packs. Lots of good guilds out there that are what I call players guilds!
    Thanks Neal

Feck ’em. There are plenty of good guilds who don’t do this.

Let the Leader Psychopomp Imbecile Potentate sever the thread of Prophecy and shred the Weave of Fate with his unreasonable demands and wander alone in the Doomed wasteland he has created.

By the way, I didn’t vote because I cannot select all that are applicable:

    Taxes? TROLOOLOLOOLLOOLLO11!!!!1!!11!!
Generally fine with stuff you can farm free-2-play.
Not willing to give up ADs, ZEN, or other premium currencies.
Not willing to give up goods that I need to progress my own character.

    Plus:

“Zen Store cash items?!?!? Feck You! Feck You in the ear! Moron!”

    😡

So, as a guild leader myself, I kind of have a double standard here. I’ve shelled out zen to push the stronghold along more times than I can count, be they chests of power or stacks of Major Vouchers of whatever off the auction house. I encourage my guild members to give whatever they can and our message of the day regularly includes whatever we need for the next upgrade (“We need Heroic Shards, please do the builder’s quest today!”). I find once people know what you need, they are usually willing to spend a few minutes of their day grinding for it.

    However …

The idea of FORCING guild members to grind to help the stronghold is wrong in my opinion. Making them spend premium currency to buy you chests of power is even more wrong. Expecting a new 70 who is still working through boons to donate campaign currency they need for advancement is also wrong. The players in your guild are well aware of the guild boons and how useful they are. I find they are more than willing to work for it, IF they know what is needed. New players eventually finish campaigns and then will go back and pick up currency to donate. Sometimes we all need to remember that this is a GAME and the people in your guild are supposed to be having fun.

Also .. if anyone does find themselves in the position of being forced to shell out real money for your guild, I recommend you find a new guild (And if you are looking for a low key one that never asks for silly things like that, PM me in world @Kira_Skytower)

Well, Firstly I am curious about current reaction to such matter. Have all forgot how it where when Strongholds where introduced?
There where guilds which also demanded players to spend their zen for Stronghold starter packs or you get bootkick from guild.
Also now also is current meta, to spend zen for SH, but it’s more optional.

Anyways.. what you can expect if game is pure pay 2 try win … Which is worst version of pay2win/

Perhaps these guild leaders are all Cryptic employees anxious about their Christmas bonus.

Nothing wrong with requiring the guildies to help out, considering that they are getting guild benefits for free otherwise. It takes a lot of time and work for Guild Leaders to keep a guild going. Why shouldn’t people help their guild? Require them? Sure, if it’s something that’s reasonable. What is reasonable? That’s always going to vary. Find a guild where the requirements meet your acceptance and be done with the matter.

Most guild boons are rather insignificant these days. 8000 Power, please loool

Too many crap guilds and mafia guild leadership clicks- tell them to pound sand.
Generally I do think guilds are fine – however I think Alliances have probably done more harm than good. In the past I’ve heavily invested in helping build guildes as far as time, effort and AD – never again.

Most of the early lvl 20 guilds resorted to actively requesting stuff from their guildies and they were fine with it, there’s nothing unlawful or unethical about it, if someone doesn’t like that then that person can find a guild that doesn’t do that, there’s plenty of those out there; that being said, the stated reason behind the request is lame.

No way am I spending money on something that I could be kicked from at any time and I have no control over. Make me a guild leader then we’ll talk, until then be grateful for whatever I chose to give.

On XB, especially, you had to pay if you wanted the boons. In LGPG, we had to give 7 million AD to the coffer. Later on, they accepted Stronghold Stater Packs or legendary mounts. But we got to 20 within 7 hours of a perfect build time. You can’t do that without requiring donations.

To all the short memory types and the new players:

In the early we used to donate actual AD(!) to mimic. Millions of ADs…AD from professions were non-existing at that time. (mod7+)
As a Guild leader I remember we had to buy a truckload of genie’s gift and chest of power.
There were guilds indeed with actual weekly taxes.
If you wanted to build the SH faster you left millions of ADs in the walls.
We used to farm Dragonflights, heroic encounters, weekly campaign quests together.

Fortunatelly professions, craftable AD vouchers and Siege of Neverwinter event (thank god) solved mostly our problems.

As a guild leader on Xbox, I and my co rank 7’s would never in a month of Sundays force any of our guild members to but zen packs, it is just wrong.
As has been stated, this is a game and no one has the right to tell you what you should do with your on real world currency for a game.
If members wish to donate via buying items on the zen market, I would actually advise them not to as, and this has happened to us, it can lead to an addiction in buying stuff and it is something that I would never encourage.

We do let everyone know what we are building and the currencies needed, but never force people to do stuff, that then becomes like a real world job.

I’m a guild leader of a casual guild that had to be rebuilt after it was stolen. I’m well-aware of guilds that demanded weekly donations or “taxes” from its members. I would personally never wish to join such a guild. They definitely upgraded faster than we did, but I would never demand people donate real or in-game currency that would harm their character development or improvement. I did have dedicated guildies who chose to donate zen packs (love my fabulous officers and guildies) and I spent way more than I should but I agree that people should never have to put in currency into a guild that could boot them at any moment.

Why does this conversation even happen anymore. Seems if the 80% of players were perma-banned hyperbole was anywhere near accurate, there’s plenty of room now in existing GH20s.

Personally I wouldn’t start a new guild at this phase of the game, to much effort compounded by disadvantages from not having max boons. Unless its me and a few close buddies doing it for kicks it would be absurd to try and make a large guild at this stage in the game and this long after strongholds and alliances were introduced.
