New Asian Laws Could Change MMO Landscape

It truly were a few active days in the biz. China and South Korea both got laws underway that could possibly change the MMO landscape. As reported by multiple outlets China will force publisher to reveal loot box drop rates.

A new law in China that’s set to come into effect on May 1, 2017 will compel game makers to reveal the odds of item drops from loot boxes. Instead of guessing at the likelihood of a game’s best swag falling out when a crate is opened, or relying on experiments like this one, players will actually know the numbers up-front. Neverwinter has a Chinese version for which PWE will need to publish the lockbox drop rates as well. PC Gamer further notes that “the information will presumably be accessible to people outside of China, for one thing, so the drop rates of internationally available games will be known to all.” PWE and Cryptic could probably use different percentages for different versions of the game, but the published numbers should be somewhat telling nonetheless.

It’s also a nice validation of the work we do at Neverwinter:Uncensored. With our RNG Toolbase we have stood for more transparency within the game ever since. The case of the community vs. former PWE mod melodywhr over published drop rates on the official wiki is the best example how narrow-minded some folks still view the topic. We feel this is definitely trending in the right direction and hope other countries will follow.

South Korea, e-sports pioneers, have a similar law in place since a year. They also recently passed an amendment to a law that sanctions manufacturing and distributing programs that are not allowed by the game companies and their Terms of Service. Going to prison for developing a bot might sound silly nowaday, but it could happen in the future.

Nope. PWE also discontinued Neverwinter in Asia, so we most likely will never know.
